Being a writer can be very fulfilling. For many of us (myself included), writing is something that we do on the side. It's a fun hobby for a lot of us, but hopefully it'll bring in a few sales. I know that I won't be on the The New York Times Best Seller list. I know that I'm not going to become a millionaire from my writing. I'll probably never be well-known. I'm supposedly a "public figure" but that's only because of my posts on social media. I'm okay with all of that. I knew from the start that I won't be anything like my favorite writer of all time, Stephen King. Also, as a side note, if you hate the fact that I'm a writer, then you have to blame Mr. King. It's all his fault! He's the reason why I became a writer!
With all of that being said, writing is also not so glamorous. Besides the extremely low pay (especially for independent/self published writers like me), it can be very taxing on your health. If you work for one of the big traditional publishers, it can be extremely stressful. Some of these publishers demand that you have a new book out by a certain date. If you don't have it ready, they can drop you in an instant. The same if your book isn't a best seller - they'll drop you in an instant.
There is another thing I've hated about being a writer - the harassment and threats from "fans." These so-called "fans" are extremely toxic. They're not true fans if they're harassing me and threatening me. When I revealed what my debut novel (Us Against Them) was going to be about, I was threatened by quite a few people. These people wished death on me, that they hoped that I would be raped (I'm a survivor of rape and abuse, so that certainly triggered my PTSD and anxiety), that they hoped I would go to jail/prison (for simply writing a fictional book!), and that they would "teach me a lesson." What sort of "fan" says these things?
