I will never meet with any fans privately. I won't give them my phone number. I won't even give them my email address! Why am I so against meeting with fans privately?

You put yourself in a really bad situation. If the fan decides to make a false accusation against you, you're screwed. This has happened too many times to too many people. It's not going to happen to me! I am not going to put myself into a situation where a "fan" decides to lie about the encounter and then try to ruin my life. Nope, not happening to me! I worked way too hard to get where I am and I don't need a liar to ruin everything.

These "fans" that demand to meet me in private are not fans. If you are truly a fan, then you know that it's a very inappropriate demand to make. 
A true fan would never put me in a situation like that.

Then, there are the safety reasons to consider. I don't know who you are. I don't know if you're a serial killer or a rapist. I don't know if you're going to attack me or kill me or hold me hostage. I am not willing to take any chances with a complete stranger. 

Also, as a so-called public figure, I have a bigger responsibility to fans. I have to not only ensure my safety and well-being, but also your safety and well-being. I have to make sure that nothing inappropriate happens between us. I just want you to read my books and enjoy them. I don't want any private encounters with you!
